GF7 Satellite - Wind Turbine Satellite Imagery Captured by Gaofen-7

Introduction to Wind Power Generation in China

China is a global leader in the wind power industry, with the world's largest wind power market. In recent years, China has made remarkable progress in wind turbine manufacturing and installed capacity. By the end of 2023, China's total installed wind power capacity had exceeded 400 GW, accounting for nearly half of the world's total installed wind capacity, with both onshore and offshore wind power growing strongly. China is home to world-leading wind turbine manufacturers such as Goldwind and Envision Energy, and holds core competitiveness in turbine design, material R&D and intelligent control. Wind power has become a key force driving China's energy transition, playing an important role in reducing carbon emissions and achieving sustainable development. In the future, China plans to continue advancing wind power development “offshore and in the mountains”, increasing the share of offshore wind, and focusing on large-scale bases and distributed wind projects to achieve carbon neutrality.

Wind power in China is developing rapidly in many provinces, with the largest installed capacity concentrated in the northern “Three North” regions (Northwest, North and Northeast China) and the coastal provinces. Specifically:

Northern provinces (such as Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Gansu) mainly rely on onshore wind power with huge base-scale projects. Coastal provinces (such as Jiangsu, Shandong and Guangdong) are rapidly advancing offshore wind power, with installed capacity growing fast. China is building a number of 10-GW-level wind power bases, with the “Three North” regions dominating onshore wind expansion and East and South China dominating offshore wind expansion.
