🌴 Haikou, located at the northern tip of Hainan Island, is the capital of Hainan Province and a key coastal tourism city along the Maritime Silk Road. With a long coastline, mangroves, volcanic craters and old arcade streets, the city has a truly unique urban texture. In the early 2000s, Haikou was undergoing rapid urbanization, with its urban frame expanding fast and old and new districts changing every day.
🕰️ That is why the 2004 Haikou historical satellite image map is so precious. It faithfully records the urban pattern, road network, ports, farmland villages and original coastline of Haikou 20 years ago. It is first-hand material for studying urban sprawl, land-use change, transport evolution and ecological shifts, and provides authoritative evidence for land planning, heritage protection and legal verification.
📡 Captured by the 1-meter resolution OrbView satellite, this dataset shows houses, streets and field plots with striking clarity, fully meeting large-scale historical comparison and thematic mapping needs. The data is orthorectified and color-enhanced, ready to overlay on modern maps.
👉 The following images are the 2004 Haikou historical satellite image data captured by the 1m-resolution OrbView satellite.
The OrbView series, developed and operated by OrbImage (now GeoEye, USA), was a world-leading commercial high-resolution optical remote-sensing constellation in the early 2000s. OrbView-3, launched in June 2003, offered 1m panchromatic and 4m multispectral imaging from about 470 km altitude, with short revisit time and excellent clarity.
Widely used for urban planning, land surveying, disaster assessment and reconnaissance, it left valuable historical archives over China's coastal cities. The year 2004 was its most stable in-orbit period, and this Haikou dataset was acquired in that golden window with low cloud and ideal viewing angles.
