Hong Kong, on the southern coast of China at the eastern mouth of the Pearl River, combines Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. By 2005 it was already a world financial, trade and shipping hub, enjoying an economic rebound with fast infrastructure growth — Disneyland opened, new towns expanded and cross-harbour projects were on the drawing board.
Satellite images from 2005 freeze that moment in time. They record the Victoria Harbour skyline, Central and Tsim Sha Tsui blocks, new-town boundaries, plus the hills and wetlands of Lantau and Shatin. For change detection, land-title evidence, illegal-construction dating, research and nostalgic displays, such archives are irreplaceable.
OrbView-3 offered 1m panchromatic imagery with stable quality, sharp enough for roads, building clusters and port facilities — ideal for historical base maps and old-vs-new overlay analysis.
The images below are 1m-resolution historical satellite images of Hong Kong taken by the OrbView satellite in 2005.
OrbView was operated by Orbital Imaging (ORBIMAGE, now part of Maxar), including OrbView-2 (SeaStar) and OrbView-3. OrbView-3, launched in 2003 with a 5-year design life, delivered 1m panchromatic and 4m multispectral data — among the sharpest civilian sources at the time for mapping, planning and defence.
The 36 Hong Kong scenes here were collected during its stable 2005 period, with consistent season and color balance, perfect as a historical base map.
